Key findings

  • €20/hour is the going rate. Across all subjects the median advertised rate is €20, and half of all listings sit between €15 and €26 per hour.
  • STEM and specialist subjects cost more. Chemistry, Statistics, French, Spanish, Geography and Programming carry a median of €23–€25/hour — a modest premium over the €20 baseline seen in Mathematics, English and Physics.
  • The biggest subjects are the most competitive. Mathematics (273 listings) and English (235) have the widest supply and the lowest entry-level pricing (P25 of €15 and €12 respectively), giving families more budget options.
  • Rates vary by country. Tutors in the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany post the highest medians (€25/hour), while France and Poland sit at the €20 baseline — but online delivery means families can hire across borders at the best price.
  • Online keeps prices accessible. Without travel time or room hire, online rates stay well below the €30–€50/hour often quoted for in-person private tuition.

Methodology & reuse

Rates are derived from active, publicly listed tutor advertisements on iTutorOnline as of June 2026. Each advertisement is tagged with one or more subjects; a listing contributes to every subject it is tagged with. We report the median and interquartile range rather than the mean, so a small number of premium listings does not distort the typical figure. Listings below €1 or above €200/hour were excluded as outliers.
